The Sound of Silence

The Sound of Silence SILENT 55 Franc Jansen , Founder and Director of JMS Yacht Management was at Marina di Varazze to follow up on the outfitting of the luxurious electric catamaran: SILENT 55. In 2019, this eco-friendly yacht won the “Best of Boats Award” in the category “Best for Travel” which entails that she is suitable for traveling long distance whilst living on board permanently. Her design and engineering enables her to cruise among inland waters and tough conditions at sea. Another step forward in moving towards a sustainable yachting industry. Congratulations to Franz Böse, Lionel Joham, Jörg Schaaf, Michael Köhler and Malte Link from Silent-Yachts for implementing such a vision towards the right direction! Find out more about Green Yachting by downloading our article In November of 2019, the SILENT 55 won the “Best of Boats Award” in the category “Best for Travel”. This specific category is defined as “suitable for long distance travels with all amenities to live on board permanently, adapted for both inland waters and the tough conditions at sea”. Generally, she can easily be handled by two people, making the SILENT 55 ideal for families cruising with or without additional crew. As the very first – fully solar powered – production yacht in the history of nautical travel, the SILENT 64 crossed the entire Atlantic Ocean in February 2018. This extraordinary achievement proved the outstanding durability and efficiency of the SILENT solar-electric drivetrain even during unfavourable and rough weather conditions. Autonomy SILENT-YACHTS are true world cruisers with the possibility of unlimited range, even when the sun is not shining. In case of longer periods of bad weather, the range extender automatically starts to recharge the lithium Batteries when they are low. Their capacity provides ample energy for propulsion as well as all household appliances including the air conditioning, ice-machine, water-maker or laptops (230 VAC / 110 VAC). There is no need to search for a marina in order to charge the batteries, get ice, refuel or to fill the water tanks. A SILENT-YACHT can virtually cruise for weeks without fuel or the need to start the generator. Luxury High levels of luxury require permanently available energy. On a SILENT-YACHT, you can watch TV, enjoy a cold beer, have the air conditioning running and produce up to 2000 litres of drinking water per day without starting the generator. The air conditioning cools down the boat quickly and efficiently whenever needed. This, of course, is also true for heating during cold weather. Efficiency and Weight Underwater lines are optimised by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and towing-tank tests. The lightweight construction is a result of bionic design, the use of carbon fibres and high-quality resins. Interior furniture is made of stiff and lightweight composite plates with real wood-veneer. This reduces the weight significantly to about half the weight of a conventionally constructed and powered yacht. Each kg / pound saved is equivalent to less wave drag and friction and therefore less energy required to move the boat. Overall, this leads to high levels of efficiency enabling fast and self-sustaining propulsion. Salon and cabins are wrapped in thermal insulation. Furthermore, all windows are shaded by either the roof and/or the hull, thus lowering the energy consumption needed to keep the interior at comfortable temperature levels. Reliability All the electrical components are of high industrial quality and are being engineered / built in Europe and the USA. Motors, inverters and their cables are IP69 certified. This means that they even work when permanently submerged in highly pressurised water. In comparison to a conventional diesel powered propulsion system an electric motor is far more reliable as the only moving parts are the rotor and its two bearings. Fuel bases problems are an issue of the past as well. All wirings are tin-coated and all plugs feature a custom design which prevents humidity and water from entering. Additionally, all parts exposed to the marine environment are made of corrosion resistant materials. Redundancy & Safety All vital components are redundant to ensure double safety. The configuration of all components makes sure an overload is impossible, making the solar-electric drivetrain far safer than conventional propulsion systems. We are also proud to say that our catamarans were the first to be certified according to DIN EN ISO 16315 for the marine operations of electrically powered yachts. Still Not Sure? Environmental Education

Environmental Education ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IS CRUCIAL With the rise of nature and wildlife documentaries that highlight the fragile state of our environment and the animals we share the planet with, this is not a new subject. However, when should we start educating people about the need to change the way we treat our planet? As a business that relies solely on the ocean and the yachts who sail them, we are acutely aware that we need to act now to reverse the damage that humans have done to the planet. We have listed below a number of organisations that are fighting for our planet and we urge you to visit these website to learn more and support their initiatives: Why not consider following some organisations saving our planet and oceans… Still Not Sure? NEW IMO REGULATIONS

NEW IMO REGULATIONS With recent IMO regulation amendments and deadlines looming for IHM, what are the areas you are the most concerned about? The International Maritime Organisation has a number of NOx emissions regulations. Commonly referred to Tiers I, II and III. Tiers III refers to the Nox emissions. Vessels above 500GT constructed on or after 1 January 2016 must already comply with the emission limits. Be aware that from 2021, vessels below 500GT but above 24 meters will also have to comply. With regards to the Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), compliance is mandatory for yachts over 500GT, read more about the certification here For existing vessels, owners need to install a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) at the vessel’s next renewal survey in line with the IOPP certificate (MARPOL Annex I) after September 2019, essentially creating a five year window for retrofits between September 2019 and September 2024, depending on when the renewal survey is due. (Source ABS) The IMO has issued guidelines on maritime cyber risk management and then a resolution ensuring that cyber risks are appropriately addressed in existing safety management systems no later than the 1st annual verification of the DOC after 1 January 2021. Are you confident you have completed or started the process of bringing your crew and yacht in to line for the above IMO Regulations? Still Not Sure? In life, you never know until you ask.
