NEW IMO REGULATIONS AND DEADLINES
With recent IMO regulation amendments and deadlines looming for IHM, what are the areas you are the most concerned about?
The International Maritime Organisation has a number of NOx emissions regulations. Commonly referred to Tiers I, II and III. Tiers III refers to the Nox emissions. Vessels above 500GT constructed on or after 1 January 2016 must already comply with the emission limits. Be aware that from 2021, vessels below 500GT but above 24 meters will also have to comply.
With regards to the Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), compliance is mandatory for yachts over 500GT, read more about the certification here
For existing vessels, owners need to install a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) at the vessel’s next renewal survey in line with the IOPP certificate (MARPOL Annex I) after September 2019, essentially creating a five year window for retrofits between September 2019 and September 2024, depending on when the renewal survey is due. The IMO has issued guidelines on maritime cyber risk management and then a resolution ensuring that cyber risks are appropriately addressed in existing safety management systems no later than the 1st annual verification of the DOC after 1 January 2021.
